Noah Kahan, Stick Season, and the Rock Star Next Door

The Rock Star Next Door

How fun that Noah Kahan is on SNL and splashed across the New York Times this week?

Mr. Kahan, 26, graduated recently enough from my kids’ high school that the teachers and the coach still talk about him.

My husband just read the New York Times article [gift link!] and called out to me from his office. “He sounds like a character from one of your books!”

My books are flattered. :)

So of course I read the article myself, and was tickled to see that NYT took a moment to define “stick season” for those readers who might not know the term.

I did just the same thing in chapter one of Steadfast, when I wrote:

In Vermont, we called November “stick season.” It was a dark month after all the fall color had faded from the trees. The sun went down every day at 4:30, and the clean white snow hadn’t arrived yet to cover all our sins.

So clearly you guys understand that song already. :)

Mr. Kahan is from Strafford, Vermont, which is SO CLOSE to the fictional Tuxbury and Colebury that I have to chuckle. Such a tiny town, too, and out of the way. My younger son’s bff in kindergarten lived there, and I used to grumble when I had to drive over there, because all the roads are super slow and twisty.

The article is adorable, especially the part about people driving to Strafford just to see the place. (I hope they go during stick season and not mud season, though. Because that might not work out so well.)

People are also visiting his favorite restaurants in Hanover and Lebanon. (Because there aren’t restaurants in Strafford.)

So cute. So much like a romance novel. I almost can’t stand it.
